River Arts is pleased to present some of the area’s most successful artists authors and educators in a series of lectures 2010 Lecture Series to be announced
2009 Lectures Thursday evenings 7:00 -8:00 January 22, 2009 – July 2, 2009 170 Main Street, Damariscotta JAN 22 COLIN PAGE, popular plein air artist who paints midcoast landscapes in a contemporary impressionist style, will speak on the challenges of making a living as an artist without losing integrity, and the joys and hazards of painting out of doors. FEB 12 DAVID LITTLE, accomplished painter will speak on 1) his evolution from surrealism to impressionism, 2) insights into the process between studio and plein-air painting, and 3) his transition to historical research of artists who painted Mt Katahdin. FEB 26 ALAN BRAY, whose casein paintings are cool, elegant and mystical, will discuss his medium and his art. After studying in Florence, Italy, Bray returned to his roots in central Maine 30 years ago where he has concentrated on enigmatic, spiritual renderings of his native land. MAR 12 ROLF WINKES, Professor Emeritus of History of Art and Architecture at Brown University, will speak on “Natura Morta;” Still life in the Greco-Roman art world. MAR 26 BRUCE BROWN Maine’s premier art supporter, educator and past Director of the Center for Maine Contemporary Art will tell the incredible story of his passion for and his collection of major works of art on a limited budget. APRIL 9 CAROL BRIGHTMAN, Award winning author of many books, including Writing Dangerously, a biography of Mary McCarthy. Ms. Brightman will speak on her upcoming book, Scouting the Perimeter – a Family Saga from Cuba to Alaska. APRIL 23 ERIC HOPKINS is one of the most recognizable and collected painters of Maine’s islands and coastline. Eric’s tag line to describe his artistic process is: Reflect. Project. Connect. He reflects on the world around him, projects his thoughts through his chosen medium – paint, photography, molten glass, or writing- to connect his ideas with a wider audience. MAY 7 ELIZABETH AWALT‘s paintings of visionary landscapes have been shown in museums and galleries both in this country and abroad. She will talk about her work. MAY 21 CAROL BASS Carol’s books, Maine Living and Maine Cottage have been immensely popular. Carol will speak on the Deep Power of Color.
JUNE 11 DOUGLAS PRESTON, author of several books including Monster of Florence, Preston has also written for The New Yorker, National Geographic, Natural History, Smithsonian, Harper’s and Travel & Leisure, among others. JUNE 25 LOIS DODD is well known for her light born direct renderings of everyday landscapes and interiors. Recently profiled in “Art in America”, she will talk about her paintings. ———————————————————— SUNDAY JUNE 28 JANET FISH, famous for her original contributions to still life, will speak on her vivid and engaging explorations into the life-giving actions of light. , JULY 16 Chuck Rand, Director of the Dickinson Research Center at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, will do a presentation on Contemporary Western Art.
