A Sample of Works
Juror’s Statement
Being invited to select work for an opened juried exhibition is an
honor, a joy and an obligation. In this instance it was all the more
so because not only did I select 82 works from 126 submissions by
artists from Brooklin, Hope, Lewiston and Portland as well as the mid-
coast, I was able to lay out the placement of each work as well. In
most instances, a guest juror selects the work and leaves the
arrangement of the show to others, but much of my decision making was
determined by how best to find visually sympathetic works that would
create distinctly different aesthetic responses in each of six
separate exhibition spaces within this beautiful building. For
example, the room to the right of the entrance speaks of bold design
and color while works in the room across the way offers a quieter,
more delicate tone. Spotting the works helped define how many works
could be included so that the exhibition seems generous in size
without being either too crowded or too sparse.
Every open juried show presents a unique challenge to build
discernible visual and thought provoking threads among the inevitable
diverse artistic points of view presented in a variety of mediums.
Ever so slowly the initial chaotic mix of works piled up and spread
throughout the gallery for consideration begins to take on a life of
its own as one work “speaks” to another in a visually sympathetic
way. The process is dynamic: works that initially may have been put
aside are brought back to complement others; similarly, works of
merit may be retired in an attempt to serve up the most delicious
selection and arrangement of “Food: A Feast for the Eyes.”
possible. My hope is that you enjoy this exhibition as much as I
did in selecting it.
