Beginning Oil Painting with Matthew Barter–
Fridays June 5–July 1 10 am – 1 pm
We will start with a lesson in simplified sketching in plain air. Then we will translate these sketches into paintings with oils on board. Lessons will include studies in techniques such as glazing and layering paint. We will have fun exploring the essence of painting while capturing the human spirit on the rugged coast of Maine.
Matt’s work has been shown several Maine galleries: the Leighton Gallery in Blue Hill, Wingspread Gallery and Shaw galleries in Northeast Harbor, the Barter Family Gallery in Sullivan, the June Fitzpatrick Gallery in Portland, the Firehouse Gallery in Damariscotta and in Portland Oregon at Artemesia Gallery.
Watercolor Workshops with Hannah Ineson – starting June 17

$45/session for members $50/non-members – Sign up for all 6 and take a 10% discount
Demonstrations and individual attention. people do NOT need to sign up for the whole 6 weeks – It won’t be a “course” so much as a workshop each week, and I’ll provide lots of individual attention. If someone has never painted, I can give them basic exercises no matter when they show up.
Outdoor Oil Painting with Brad Betts
- June 30, July 7, July 14, July 21 9am-4pm $105/day members $130/day non-members

In this plein air painting workshop, you will learn techniques to bring light, atmosphere, and a luminous depth to your paintings. You will also be taught basic exercises that can help you paint what you see while tapping into your natural ability. Beginning to advanced painters welcome.
Brad Betts, an award-winning maritime artist, has been painting for over 18 years. An artist member of the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA), Brad’s paintings reflect his love and appreciation of the sea. His work is filled with movement: schooners under full sail battle through wind-driven seas and Friendship sloops glide through the calm waters of Maine’s inlets.
Living year-round in East Boothbay, the quintessential postcard-perfect Maine coastal village, means Brad has endless subject matter practically at his doorstep. The artist especially enjoys the challenge of painting on location: “There is nothing like sitting in front of a Maine scene and painting it. When you hear the sounds of waves and birds and you smell the sea, you truly get to be a part of the painting.” Visit Brad’s website at www.downeastgallery.com Or his blog “Wet Brushes” at http://downeastgallery.blogspot.com
